I was really excited about Modern Warfare 2 – my only gripe was the length of the game’s single player campaign. I didn’t purchase it on release day because I was on vacation and wanted to wait to see what the opinion was amongst gamers, Modern Warfare 2’s core audience.
I saw the outcry about that level, where you play the part of a Russian terrorist and gun down civilians in an airport – it’s that outcry which I would like to comment on.
Firstly, upon loading the single player campaign, you are given the option of not playing that part of the game where you play the part of a Russian terrorist (or that of the American infiltrating the group). If you decided not to play through that part of the game, you’re not missing out on anything, but those who have played through it, after being given the choice of not playing it, and still complain, ought to think twice. You were given the choice, you refused, but you still feel it’s right to complain. I don’t understand that (seriously, leave a comment – I would like to to understand).
Secondly, and perhaps most important, is that the vast majority of us who play the game, and fully understand that it is just a game, know the difference between right and wrong, and also reality. Playing Forza 3 and speeding around a race track in excess of 200 MPH doesn’t compel me to do the same when I’m driving home from work. If you can’t see the difference, you have bigger problems than complaining about a video game.
Infinity Ward have done a superb job with Modern Warfare 2, and even though the campaign is on the short side, there are several moments where I just went woah. It’s a great game, and fully worthy of the $59.99 price tag.
